Flower Fairy

   

Since I am attending an art event in May called "En Le Jardin", hosted by Jenn, I have been thinking a lot about the flower fairy theme of the retreat. I love to make found object art pieces. What that means is, I like to take items that were not intended to go together, and not used in their original fashion, and mix them together to create a one of a kind piece. Here is the Flower Fairy inspired piece I have been putting together.

I have made it by taking a vintage creamy and perfectly rusted plant hanger, and attached it to a vintage china plate. I added some moss to the bottom, and a foofed up story book doll as my fairy.

Glittered stars and rhinestone accents added the sparkle I was going for.

 

No project seems complete to me without millinery, especially pink!

She is quite charming, isn't she? My flower fairy....

Well.....it has recently come to my attention that Sandra actually crocheted the pieces on the apron herself!! I already knew she was ultra-talented, but now I am blown away! Thank you so much for all the work you put into my beautiful apron, Sandra!

My Favorite Things Vol. VI ~ Vintage Prize Ribbons

A lot of you out there like to collect vintage prize ribbons. I thought today I would share a few of mine in my collection. I have probably 50-or 60 total, but I just pulled out my favorites to show you today. I really only collect horse show ribbons, as I grew up riding horses and both my daughter and I are avid equestrians. We both love Hunter/Jumper and have competed. Of course the most sought after prize ribbons nowadays seems to be the pink. Only problem is, that means you won 5th place! I always thought that since pink was such a great color, it should have the honor of being number one. Oh well, I'll put it on my to do list to petition someone to get that changed.

 

This ribbon has faded over time and I love that about it. I also really like the center medallion.

This one is not pink, but beautiful none the less..

It is about 2 feet long, and the tassles really make it exquisite.

Again, another really pretty center medallion. This one is not as old as some of my other ones (I have one in my boutique from 1898!) but still gorgeous!

Ahhh, back to faded pink in all it's 5th place glory....

I swear it would be worth deliberately slowing your horse down or missing a jump to come in 5th!

Again with the tassles. The muted faded gold and pink are so luscious!

Here are a few things I do to display my vintage horse show ribbons. This one is adorning the front of an old picture album. It rests in the chair in my bedroom.

Another one of my favorite things to do with the prize ribbons are to use them atop my curtains, as a sort of valance. I am continually collecting more in the hopes to one day have them run across the whole top of the windows in my bedroom!

An Amazing Apron

As promised, here is the beautiful and amazing apron I recieved from 

Sandra, for Stephenie and Heather's Altered apron Swap!

Sandra really pegged me well. I adore taupes and creams and texture is so key! this gauzy rose is one of my favorite parts of the apron...

Here is a close up of the rose..

The apron itself is made out of a vintage linen tablecloth, and adorned with bits of crocheted lace. This is another flower made out of seam binding ribbon. How beautiful! She even embroiderd my initial on the apron.

Yet another gorgeous flower, and the pocket is trimmed with more vintage crocheted pieces and a rhinestone pin.

All in all, it is an amazingly beautiful piece, and I adore it. I have already worn it and recieved wonderful compliments Sandra! I think it looks beautiful on Nadia too, worn over the top of a vintage wedding gown!

Recycling at it's Prettiest!

Heather and Stephenie recently hosted a really fun apron swap. The premise was to take a vintage apron and alter it, or to create a new apron for your swap partner. I had so much fun both creating and recieving during this swap! First I want to show you what I made since the weather was so dark, gloomy and SNOWING again today, so I didn't get any good pics of the apron I recieved. 

My apron was made for Analise of Sugar*Sugar. She said she liked pinks, blues and aqua. I tried to making something that would work for her to possibly wear for shows she does, or to look pretty in her house or craft room. Here is what I came up with.....

I decided to recycle an old apron, discarded buttons, an old hat, some vintage bed linens and fabric scraps! I took a vintage gingham apron as my base and began to altered it. I knew I wanted to do some kind of monogram on it, and I came up with this pink polka dot fabric scrap and blanket stitched around it. I also made the cute little fabric pom poms out of vintage bed sheets and fabric scraps. I  glued mismatched discarded buttons in the centers so it kind of looked like fabric flowers. The other flower is a vintage millinery flower off of the hat I recycled .

Here is another fabric pom pom I made. I used the lace off of the sheet to trim out the top of the apron. 

I added the rest of the vintage sheet to the bottom of the apron to lengthen it. And a little bit of vintage pink pom pom trim goes well with the fabric pom poms.

More fabric pom poms made out of the remainder of the sheet.

I hope Analise likes it!

Last but not least, I wanted to share a beautiful picture of the flowering plum trees that line my driveway. I wish it would stop snowing so I could go out and enjoy them! Thanks again to Heather and Stephanie for hosting such a lovely swap! There's more to come, wait until you see what Sandra made for me, I love it!

Just a funny side note.....A friend pointed out to me the other day about my post announcing the winner of my giveaway.....the random number generator I used and copy/pasted into my blog post held something very interesting. This is exactly why you should think when you blog, and not just blog in a hurry:
